DeSean Jackson: Renaissance man

DeSean Jackson has become the Renaissance Man of the Eagles.
The wide receiver can run, catch, and (sort of) dance.

After his second touchdown in the Eagles’ 27-17 Monday Night victory over the Redskins, Jackson celebrated in the end zone with something that resembled an Irish jig. He called it “The Jerk.”
“That was like country dancing,” Jackson said. “We’re just out there having fun, honestly. My ankle was kind of hurting . . . so it affected my dancing.”

Jackson suffered a foot sprain during the game and left after his second touchdown to get examined. He returned in the second half. His status for Sunday’s game against the Giants, however, remains unclear.

Eagles sign RB Hill off Saints practice squad

Concerned over their depth at running back with Bran Westbrook recovering from a concussion, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed P.J. Hill off the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

To make room on the 53-man roster for Hill, who was signed Tuesday, the Eagles placed linebacker Omar Gaither on injured reserve with a foot injury, ending his season. Gaither was hurt two weeks ago in the team’s loss to the Raiders and underwent surgery last week.

Hill, 5-foot-10, 218 pounds, was signed by the Saints as a rookie free agent out of Wisconsin. He had 26 carries for 128 yards, a 4.9 yards per carry average, and scored three touchdowns in the preseason.

LeSean needs to get a handle on things

ON THE Eagles’ fourth possession of Sunday’s ugly 13-9 loss to the Raiders, LeSean McCoy committed the Two Deadly Sins for an Andy Reid-coached running back.

He fumbled and he blew a blitz-pickup.

Took a handoff from Donovan McNabb at his 11 and cut through a hole on the left side of the line, only to have Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour circle around behind him and knock the ball from his grasp. Much to his relief, center Jamaal Jackson fell on the loose ball.

Four plays later, on a third-and-2 at the Oakland 27, the rookie failed to pick up Raiders linebacker Thomas Howard on a blitz. McNabb had tight end Alex Smith open for what would have been a first down on the play. But the unblocked Howard hit him just as he was releasing the ball, forcing an incompletion.

Trotter burned on 2 crucial passes

“I have to do a better job reading and reacting,” the linebacker says after his second game back.

There will be many questions for the Eagles after yesterday’s disappointing 13-9 loss to the Raiders, but the one that will probably be asked in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons is: Why was Jeremiah Trotter on the field?
Eagles coach Andy Reid had a legitimate answer for why the 32-year-old was at middle linebacker during a crucial, late-in-the-game third down. Omar Gaither, who split first-down plays with Trotter and played on most of the defense’s nickel package, had sprained his foot, Reid said. Gaither later said he twisted his ankle.

The Eagles dressed six linebackers: starting outside linebackers Chris Gocong and Akeem Jordan, special teams contributors Tracy White and Moise Fokou, and Trotter and Gaither. Still, Trotter was on the field when Oakland faced a third-and-10 situation from its own 44 with 2:02 left in the game.
Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell faked a handoff and hit Gary Russell in the flat with Trotter covering. The running back scampered 13 yards for a first down before Trotter pushed him out of bounds for his lone tackle of the game. With the Eagles out of time-outs, the conversion dashed any hopes for getting the ball back.

“I have to do a better job reading and reacting to the run and pass,” Trotter said. “Whenever they play-action fake, you have to play the run, then get back as best as possible.”

The biggest play, however, came in the first quarter, when Oakland took advantage of Trotter’s liabilities in pass coverage. The Eagles led by 3-0 after a 45-yard David Akers field goal, and the Raiders got possession at their 14.

JaMarcus Russell immediately found tight end Zach Miller, who was 4 yards beyond Trotter.
